HealthySteps Impact Story: Adjusting to a New Home and a New Baby at Denver Health

When Karina, a new mother in a foreign country, faced the challenges of parenting alone while her husband was abroad, she sought support at Denver Health. There, she connected with Larissa Miller, Ph.D., an Infant Mental Health Psychologist and HealthySteps Specialist.

Following the difficult birth of her son Liam, Karina scheduled a WellChild visit with Larissa. Karina, alone in a new country, was experiencing feelings of depression and physical pain related to the birth. Larissa encouraged Karina to become an advocate for her health, and through connections to specialists, Karina got the medication and care she needed to start to feel better.

Over the year, Karina evolved, building a stronger bond with Liam. With Larissa's continuous support, Karina began to experience the joys of motherhood. Liam's father eventually joined the family, and Larissa continued aiding Karina through the challenges of adapting to a new culture and navigating family life.

HealthySteps Specialists like Larissa support families throughout a child's early years, ensuring both child and parent receive the assistance they need. The program not only focuses on the child's well-being but also helps new parents adjust, enabling them to be the best support for their children.

Note: Karina’s and Liam’s names have been changed to preserve anonymity.
